You should think about what interests you. I think it’s really important that people who do research are researching what they’re interested in! Once you’ve identified that area, ask yourself “what questions do I have” and “how could I answer them?” Then just start reading – a big part of being a scientist is reading what other people are doing to know what has already been done before, what have other people found, and how can you start to add to that area.

I would find something you’re interested in and learn more about it — ask your teachers about it, and read information about that subject. You can visit the British Psychological Society’s website and they have more information about the ways that you can become a psychologist.

Becoming a scientist can be different for everyone, I’m a psychologist but I did my A-Levels in English, Business and Computer Science! There are lots of different types of psychologists and lots of different ways to become one — but find what you’re interested in doing (and that might mean trying out / reading different things) and then keep learning about that.

Like Liam and Jack said, it’s good to think about what you find interesting and learn more about that. And it’s okay to change your mind as you go – you don’t need to decide right now specifically what area you’d like to work in. Just be curious, ask questions, and follow your interests!

If you know the general area you’re interested in, you can talk to your teachers about what subjects might be useful to study so you can go to university and learn more, or find out about work experience.
