I guess from about 18 when I went to university — to me, a scientist is someone who specialises in a specific area, finds out all they can about that area, and then adds new knowledge.

If we assume that we become scientists when we get our first full-time job as a scientist (so excluding being a student at a university), then it would have been at 24 years old.

I didn’t think of myself as a scientist for a long time – I think because I pictured a “scientist” being someone who works in a lab with a white coat, even though scientists actually work in all kinds of places and do all kinds of things. I was probably a scientist from about 18 when I went to university and started studying it (and I’ve never worked in a lab or worn a white coat!).

Depends what you consider to be a scientist. I started conducting my own research at 21, but I’ve always been asking questions about how the world works.
