A lot is to do with how we perceive stressful stimuli – our minds often make it out that it is a lot worse than it is. So one solution would be to try to think objectively about the source of stress (e.g., “what is the worst thing that can happen?”). More recently, meditation and mindfulness exercises have been shown to help people distance themselves from the source of stress. However, remember that experiencing some stress is just a normal part of life.
I think that’s a good question and something a lot of people struggle to figure out! It can depend a bit on what’s causing the stress – for example if it’s that someone has too much going on & not enough time to do it, it might help to find ways to reduce the amount of stuff they have to do. Generally what helps stop stress is:
1. Talking to someone about how you’re feeling. If stress is having a big impact on a person’s life sometimes a counsellor or therapist can be helpful too
2. Exercising (in a way that’s fun / enjoyable to you)
3. Having tools that help you in the moment of stress, like breathing exercises
4. Finding a way to feel like you’re in control of the situation again, rather than just loads of stuff happening & it feeling like there’s nothing you can do about it
5. Accepting when there are things you can’t control or change (this is a super hard one!)
6. Talking to someone (I put it on here twice because it’s so important – both to get help & fun talking/hanging out too)
